While the most recent episode of Black Lightning advances the storylines of the hero and his family members, as well as Tobias Whale, the real focus is on Agent Odell (Bill Duke). Odell, with his sombre voice and hangdog facial expression, has been around in the series almost from the outset. I have loathed the character, and his seemingly heartless nature. While I am not now thinking that Odell is a wonderful person, Duke was given the opportunity to show us a lot more about him.
Essentially, throughout the episode we see Odell use a variety of methods of manipulation as he gives a new costume to Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) before releasing him from quarantine, convinces Lynn (Christine Adams) to help find a cure for a virus affecting meta-humans, torments Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III), keeps the heat on Thunder (Nafessa Williams), or “Blackbird,” as she is now known, and even turns Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain) into one of his pawns.
There is no reason to like Agent Odell, but you really need to give the guy props for the way he manages to control everyone.
And it made for a really well told episode, given that so many different plot threads were in the air. Putting Odell at the centre of the web gave a strong focus to the episode. It helped build the sense of power that the man holds, and made him even more of an untrustworthy threat. Well done.
