Marvel Comics this Week
I have lost touch with Marvel Comics because of the ridiculous amount of reboots. But here are three comics worth looking this week. The first is Miracleman#6. It reprints the original comics written by the unaccredited Alan Moore and drawn by Alan Davis. Moore does not want credits for this work. The second comic book is Daredevil #3 by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. The highlight of this comic book is the artwork by Samnee, a personal favourite. The series is an unjustified reboot by Marvel and that helps alienate readers. Somehow, this appears to make Marvel more money in the short run. The damage it causes in the long run seems inconsequential. Marvel’s accountants only care for results in this quarter, not over several years. Will Marvel reboot Daredevil again when his new series premieres on Netflix? Finally, if you enjoy the current company wide crossover, check out the second issues of Original Sin. I find that Original Sin is a recycling of Identity Crisis. But it’s been ten years since DC Comics published that that comic so Marvel assumes we’ve all forgotten about it.

DC Comics

Justice League United
Watch an interview with Justice League United writer Jeff Lemire. He talks about the Canadian Justice League that isn’t really a Canadian super hero team.

More Comics

All Star
NBM Publishing just released two new graphic novel s. All Star released in March 2014 is about high school baseball player Mark McGwire and his trials as a promising player. Cartoonist Jesse Lonergan delivers the first volume of this 176 pages comic set in 1998 (ISBN: ISBN 9781561638352).

Family Ties: An Alaskan Crime Drama
Eric Hobbs and Noel Tuazon are the creators on the Family Ties. It’s a story about an Alaskan crime boss whose children try to take over his empire. NBM released this 208 pages graphic novel (ISBN: 9781561637294) in April 2014.

TJ and Amal
tcaf2014-05_1.jpg
Long running Web comics TJ and Amal by cartoonist by E.K. Weaver just ended abruptly this week. Updates on her Website had continued regularly but the entire last chapter appeared last week. It was almost wordless. TJ and Amal is popular with a wide audience. The end of the story differs from what Weaver told us would happen in this interview ComicBookBin did with her in 2012. We expected more intrigues. TJ and Amal had always been an excellent comic. Although the last chapter is unclear, at 500 pages, it is still an excellent read.

Sfeer Theory
So you’ve been a fan of TJ and Amal for years and now that it has ended, you do not know where to get your queer Web comics fix. Here’s a suggestion. Sfeer Theory by Alex Signer and Jayd Aït-Kaci is an answer. It’s set in an alternate fin de siècle and features Balzac an immortal wizard and Luca Valentino, his apprentice. They wield sfeer theory, a kind of magic or telekinesis. The comic is on hiatus for now but worth a visit. The creators have produced two and a half chapters thus far.

Tea house
For gay and yaoi comics fans who need something more direct and graphic, I suggest Teahouse. Also set in Victorian times in an alternate world, it’s the story of a whore house, its prostitutes and clients. The story is set in court intrigues and tends to be a bit more visceral. It is a different way of presenting queer-friendly comics that is on the edge of soft porn while having a back story. This one is not safe for work at all.

Comics to Film

The Flash
Watch two new Flash trailers from the series pilot which airs on The CW this fall. The first one is more an ad with a crossover from Arrow. The second clip almost tells you the entire plot of the first episode. It should be fun to watch.

The Guardians of the Galaxy
Marvel will release a new trailer of the Guardians of the Galaxy on Monday May 19, 2014. Here is a glimpse of the new trailer.

Movies

Interstellar
Paramount released a new trailer of its upcoming film called Interstellar on Friday, May 16. Interstellar is the story of how mankind decided to leave Earth in the near future to find a new planet to live on. Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey performs the lead role.
