Batman Rebirth 3
So now we're having a deeper look at the newest editions to Gotham's crime fighting scene. Gotham and Gotham Girl have a parallel origin to our Dark Knight but one were their rich parents survive. They seem to take a lighter path still filled with personal sacrifice. They become champions of justice by choice not by necessity. The juxtaposition seems more intriguing at this stage I have to admit but I'm wondering where we go from here.

We have ample amounts of darkness in this story. Gotham is being relentlessly targeted by terrorists. Although Batman should welcome the help of two super powered bat fanatics he still finds a little time to dig into their past. Now it seems like he's willing to trust the new dynamic duo perhaps even appreciate them a little. He goes so far as to offer encouragement and even assigns them a bit of authority over the salvation of the population. It's this acceptance of the new heroes that has me a little worried in a good way.

The story now has it's bad guy the old school Professor Hugo Strange. Here's a guy who knows how to get under Batman's skin. I would like to make the bold prediction here that Strange is behind the super powers granted to Gotham and Gotham Girl. I also predict Strange plans to sacrifice the siblings at a precisely timed moment to cause the maximum amount of pain to the Dark Knight. I believe the chances of these d list heroes surviving the end of this story arc to be very slim.

David Finch does an excellent job framing the story as it gains momentum. Lots of people now do good Batman Finch is one of them. The color and ink are right there too. Nothing breaks from the mood, a great job all around.

If I'm right and we are taken to darker and darker places here I believe this could be a classic Batman tale. Lets hope the writer doesn't flinch and the desire to create enduring IP is secondary to telling a great story.

8 out of 10.
