Arrow is back, however my mixed feelings about the show still persist. It’s certainly likeable but the audience is ten hours in and there is not a substantial amount of depth to chew on. Maybe this show will never reach the heights of an incredible cable show but at the very least the show could use some more steam and some raised stakes. That being said none of the central mysteries of the show have been pulled back . We still know nothing about Moira and the mysterious group she works for her not to mention her strange connections to the well dressed man. The mid-season finale raised the stakes by introducing Merlyn and having him sort of shatter Ollie’s perceptions which was the focus of this episode. Although it is never specifically stated a keen audience member wonders if Ollie was shaken in confidence by the Merlyn last episode. Exactly what his intentions are for a shattered interest in being the Green Arrow are unclear. Some interesting scenes came out of this one that specifically needs to be highlighted was the all too brief fight with Diggle and Ollie. The fight was heavy brutal and hard to watch it was excellent choreography that I do not come to expect from the show. Ollie helping the nosy Dinah was an okay subplot but did not lead to the best or most interesting depiction of The Firefly character. The character was so melodramatic and irrational his motivations just fell flat.

Even though the show was meant to show you a relatable villain by the time anybody starts killing firefighters it is next to impossible for me to empathize with them. Lately my favorite character on the show is the fast food favorite of all of Starling city Big Belly Burger. The fast food chain has made an appearance in almost every episode and deserves recognition in this review. The delights of Big Belly Burger were handed off too Moira Queen who extremely rudely denied the meal. This point highlights a problem many viewers will likely have with the show after sticking with it for so long. Which is of course what exactly are we as an audience expected to feel about Moira. She is a horrible person and because of her weird involvement in this mysterious corporation she has had virtually two husbands kidnapped. It would not even be outlandish to think that she had Ollie kidnapped and put on that island.
Dinah and Tommy had a nice little subplot this week. Ever since the supposed redemption of Tommy the character almost seems too good for Dinah. Tommy has been the perfect boyfriend and Dinah won’t even give him a drawer till the end of an entire episode. More interesting however is not Dinah’s relationship with Ollie but her relationship with the Green Arrow. She half approves of what he is doing but does not. She also has nowhere else to turn too. If given some proper time hopefully Arrow will flesh out more into a three dimensional show even after the mid-season break.

Rating: 7 /10
