Adventures of the Super Sons #7 Review

Issue 7 is more like Adventure of the Super Son, as the story is almost exclusively about Robin. Both he and Superboy are trapped on the prison planet, Takron-Galtos, and Damien Wayne spends the story hunting for his friend.

This does give a lot of opportunity for the other villains in the tale to do their things. Gizmo and Grundette each get decent roles, while Robin fires off insults as fast a punches.

But somehow, this issue didn’t have the spark that the rest of the series has had. I think it’s the simple case of removing Superboy from much of the tale. It’s the interaction between the two young heroes that is the core of the book. The bond and rivalry between them, and Tomasi’s skill with their dialogue, is what has made the Super Sons so readable, both in their own book, and now here.

But without Superboy, we wind up with Snarky Robin in Space. And as much as I enjoy Damien, this results in an issue that just doesn’t come up to par with the others.

It’s not a bad issue. I am not condemning it, or saying that it drags down the miniseries. I’m just used to loving this book, rather than liking it, so it feels like a bit of a let-down.

Still, things look like they will be going back to normal, or as normal as things ever get for these two, with the next issue. And I suspect that, reading this in a collected format, this chapter would breeze by without standing out as much.

But don’t wait for that. Buy it now, and see if Damien going solo works for you.
