The latest issue of Adventures of the Super Sons continues from the previous issue, with Superboy and Robin confronting older versions of themselves on a planet far out in space.

Not too far into the tale, we find out just how this can possibly be, and what the older heroes really are. I guess I am giving away a bit of a spoiler there, but not much of one.

And, when it comes right down to it, the truth of the situation is scarcely important. The fun in this issue lies in the interactions the young heroes have with their older selves, the degree to which they do, or do not, get along, and what the young ones learn from this.

I was surprised to see Damien referred to as Ibn Al Xu-Ffasch, a name that has not been applied to the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul since Kingdom Come. At first I thought this was opening the door for the Kingdom reality to come back in some way, but no such thing happens. It seems Tomasi just wanted to remind readers of that name.

Barberi and Santorelli do a very good job on the art in this one. The older versions of the heroes maintain the distinctive looks of the young ones, while showing their age in differing ways. The best couple pages of the story come about halfway through, as Superboy and Robin rush the exit. That doesn’t take them exactly where they intended to go, but the art makes the two pages a lot of fun.

Another fun and funny adventure, even if the main storyline, the Rex Luthor plot, is more or less put on hold this issue.
